The European Environment Agency, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa propose an international conference that gathers participants from several European countries : editors and journalists from all kinds of media, especially from economic and political sections ; scientists from several disciplines ; professional organisations related to environment ; policy makers.
The meeting will feature an introductory conference, one workshop with journalists and EEA representatives and three panels with invited speakers.
1. Pressures and powers External conditions influencing the news-gathering process, clarifying the role of companies that own media as well as several kinds of sources (scientific, social, economic and political) that affect and shape the agenda.
2. Routines, biases and constraints Internal media conditionings of content processing, such as organizational routines, news values, frames and formats decisive for selection, prominence, visibility and bias, as well as characters chosen for the definition and framing of the issues.
3. Discourses, images and formats Media outcomes, patterns of representations publicized and resonance generated over the last decades, symbolically shaping public perception of the environment.
